What To Wear For College?

Amanda Hoyle, M.Ed., Psy.M. • 10 Minute Read

College is an important transition phase of everyone's life. The outset of this juncture can be a period of joy jumbled with perplexity for the young folks. How we present to the world can be a discerning factor in how people see as well as it serves as a pillar of our self-confidence. Dressing well for college hence is immensely significant.

There is always an inkling of confusion and furthering pressure with college-goers regarding dress codes. Be it casual or dressing for a prestigious event, coming to terms with the perfect attire for a given situation can be an arduous activity.

The following write-up will provide a clear picture of what to wear at college. It will help you present yourself appropriately for any occasion at college and as well as make you besuited at best.

What To Wear To College Class?

So, here we are with one of those questions which bothers maybe not whole strength of classes but a large number. What to wear or what not to depends upon a lot of things. Supposedly, a majority portion loves fashion and a majority loves to be casual.

Sometimes it comes to a question that in what position the student is at the morning before going to college.Whatever the last night maybe, it should be kept in mind that college is a place of decorum with lots of people having fun to. So, last night hangovers cannot depict your college dress.

Wearing lousy pyjamas is a bad idea. Track pants with sobering Tshirts are too cool which can easily be worn in one of those days to keep things cool and comfy. Tees and tracks go attractive together if one wants to be comfy and cool.

Full sleeves or half sleeves shirts, checks, hoodies with jeans and chinos could be perfect for college days. It makes you look decent and cool both at the same time. For girls, there could be sets like a set of too, pants, sneakers, socks, scrunchie. Or there could be top, skirts , cardigan, sneakers, hair clip, necklaces.

Another thing to be kept in mind is the weather. If it’s too hot or humid then the above mentioned are perfect but what if there is cold or snow?? Then comes jackets, jeans, trousers, blazers, and so on.These are applicable for both girls and boys.

What To Wear In Different Occasions?

Now, college comes with different occasions to attend. Maybe there is a sports event or maybe it can be an official event like seminars or interviews. Exams are considered a difficult event or phase in a pupil’s career. It can be the day of freshers or the day of farewells.

When it comes to exams, students must be comfortable because they have to put on stress and pressure. They can easily wear jeans and shirts or t-shirts and girls especially simple and sound dresses like crop tops or sleeveless tops which can keep them cool and concentrated.

At the time of parties like freshers or farewells, students can wear anything which is trendy and fashionable. They can be on Mod plaid, Funky Denims, Dark layers, Feminine neutrals, sexy denim, short layers, Stylish Athleisure, Jackets and blazers, Shiny suits, dress like the 90s or can go with sporty tees and chinos and so on.

Official days like interviews and seminars deserve suits and formal trousers, with solid shirts. Whites are most preferable to these occasions.

What Not To Wear In College?

It should be kept in mind that college dresses should be over and under at the same time. It means dresses should be both attractive and fashionable at the same time but not lousy. College is a place where one must maintain decorum and a decent line of respect should be there for the faculty.

We can do a night out with friends, by wearing lousy dresses like pajamas and shorts but colleges are places where we should avoid these things. If we wear these dresses in colleges it shows a sense of disrespect for the objective. But yes sometimes it can be entertaining because after all, it’s college, pupils wait their whole lives for this period of time.

It is understandable that college is a time period that is more like an experimental time to decide about dresses. It’s a world of fashion where everyone gets to choose what to wear and what not as more or less everyone from childhood in the school has followed a perfect dress code which is maximum time formal.

Dresses like swimsuits, jean shorts, visible bra straps, thongs, sunglasses without any reason should always be avoided cause to some extent college is never a bold fashion show.

Your image reflects who you actually are. Caked on makeup is another disastrous thing that most fashionistas agree with when it comes to a college morning. Hard makeup will always separate you from others but in a negative way. It is a place where you want to devote yourself rather than making yourself a clown in front of the whole class.

"Halloween is once a year in Kent, not every day," Eickelman said. "Save the heavy makeup for then.” Williams said heavier makeup is appropriate for the nightlife scene at college but not for everyday class makeup.” It looks fake, and I'm pretty sure if it rained it would wash right off," she said.

Mini skirts, high heels, and wearing pajamas to class are just a few of the fashion mistakes freshman college students tend to make on a regular basis.

What Specifically To Wear For Colleges And Universities

  • Comfy and plain colored tees
  • Totally formals
  • Jeans
  • Hoodies, charming jackets, and cardigans
  • Sweet and attractive dresses
  • Footwear should be distinguishable

What People Wear In Colleges

It mostly depends on the student, sometimes it also depends on the class and the location where the college is.

Types Of Students

  • The minimal- threw on some sweatpants or jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers. If female then not wearing makeup.
  • The extra struts into class in designer clothing that people may not see again because they do not wear it again. If female, then they usually wear heels and does some smoky eyes

Depending On Class

  • Early morning class- It’s very important to at least attend the classes cause it’s a lousy morning and for that moment there is no need for matching clothes and boots and whatever else. Just move into the classes.
  • Mid-day class- Now that there is the Sun upside down and it's a charming day, now you can look upon your clothes and select a decent and averagely attractive dress.
  • Lab- long pants or joggers, closed toed shoes. Nobody cares about the rest cause it’s hidden by a lab coat.

Most students wear some combination of:

On Your Head

  • A lot of guys and some girls wear baseball caps, though these should be removed in class so as not to block others’ view of the teacher/board/screen.
  • Some girls wear headbands, but hair loose or in a ponytail or twisted into a messy bun is far more common
  • Some wear religious headwear; in many schools this is completely acceptable, depending on the college.

On Top

  • T-shirts, tank tops, sweatshirts/hoodies, sweaters (casual; usually pullover rather than cardigan - my kids tell me cardigans are what “old people” wear but I think this varies by region)
  • Zip-close layers are far more popular than buttoned layers
  • Some wear an open button-down shirt (short- or long-sleeved) over their tees.
  • Girls often wear an off-the-shoulder top or other light layer over their tank tops.

On The Bottom

  • Jeans, shorts, sweat shorts, or sweatpants; sometimes khakis.
  • Some dress up a little more - polos and khakis, or a button-down shirt (buttoned up to just below the neck) with jeans.

On Your Feet:

  • Sneakers, low-heeled sandals (either hiking style or nicer ones), flip-flops, slip-on flats, or - if it’s cold - low-heeled boots
  • Many only wear socks in the winter or they only wear low-cut socks.

Wearing a button-down shirt with khakis and lace-up/nice closed shoes would be considered semi-formal at a lot of colleges - not generally something worn to class unless that’s how you always dress.

Tech students tend to wear more casual clothes; business and law students tend to dress up more; artsy students tend to wear more funky, unusual outfits.

Conclusion

Moreover, the dress should be at least decent and not violate the decorum of the college. Once the students enter college life, one thing that comes along is the independence to dress up according to the latest trends, fashions, and wishes.

But the dressing sense shall be decent and acceptable in the educational surroundings. You cannot just wear anything that you feel like and walk up to the classroom. Students shall be aware of how to dress up for Colleges all over the globe.

Last but not least don’t forget to wear your confidence. Confidence is something that is going to help you in winning the race. Some days you may not be looking much beautiful, or up to the mark but if you will be confident then, everything will be perfect.
